Prior to founding Scanlan Communications Group in 1989, Mary Scanlan gained national media experience as an editor at Harper’s Bazaar. She also was on the editorial staff of the national publications office of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Scanlan served as director of public information for the New York State Department of Social Services during the administrations of Governor Hugh L. Carey and Governor Mario M. Cuomo.
She has held several communications consulting positions in various fields. With her experiences in government and communications, CEO’s of client companies often turn to Scanlan to consult on strategic communications issues.
She has been an adjunct faculty member at Russell Sage College, The University at Albany and Cornell University School of Management. She is the author of numerous professional articles, a case study published by Rockefeller Institute and essays which have been broadcast on the Albany National Public Radio affiliate.
Mary Scanlan holds a bachelor of arts in English from Queens College and a master’s in education from Russell Sage College. She is a recipient of the Women of Excellence Award from the Albany-Colonie Chamber of Commerce. The work of her firm has been honored by numerous creative and strategic awards from local and national professional organizations.
Scanlan has been involved in numerous community activities and served on non-profit boards in the Capital Region. She led the merger of the Albany and Schenectady arts councils and served as president of the merged organization for two years. She has received the honorary title of Fellow of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Albany of the State University of New York, and currently sits on the board of directors of Capital Repertory Theatre and on an advisory board for Schenectady County Community College.
